Lilac

(aka Syringa vulgaris)

The abundant and fragrant flowers of this fire-resistant shrub provide a stunning display. The blooms attract pollinators like butterflies and moths. Be sure to prune spent flowers to reduce fire risk while rejuvenating for the following year. While the flowers are the main attraction, the foliage makes it useful in various landscape settings, including borders, hedges, screens, and as specimen plants. Deer tend to leave this plant alone. It may be used at the outer edge of the intermediate zone.
