FireSmart in action

qathet Regional District

The qRD completed a CWPP for the mainland portion of its region in 2015 and has been engaged in FireSmart activities ever since, including education, emergency planning, interagency coordination and fire mitigation treatments throughout the region.

FireSmart education is the foundation of our program. We promote all FireSmart principles but try to emphasize aspects relevant to our community and most applicable in our coastal forest environment.

The FireSmart Brochure for Coastal Homes and Properties is one of the important tools we developed to support public education. The brochure has been successful in speaking to the public in promoting FireSmart principles and is also used at all kinds of public engagements. It is given out during residential property assessments and it can also be found many brochure racks around the region. We worked closely with the Coastal Fire Centre and FireSmart BC reps as this brochure was being created and the project was funded through a grant from the Community Resiliency Investment program.

The How to FireSmart your Home with Regional FireSmart Coordinator, Marc Albert is very effective in speaking to the local audience here. I think it would be really good to see other communities across BC produce similar ones that represent their communities.  The video is a great tool and may encourage homeowners in your region to learn firsthand more about how to FireSmart your Home.
