Oriental Poppy

(Papaver orientale)

The main attraction of this clump-forming fire-resistant perennial is its vibrant orange blooms that create a striking display early to mid-summer. Plant it among later season bloomers as it goes dormant after flowering. Once the foliage dies back, carefully remove the dead leaves that would increase fire ignition risk, and wait for the new flush of fall growth. This is a good example of how maintenance helps keep a landscape fire-resistant. Oriental poppy may be used in the intermediate zone.
