N’laka’pamux Territory

My name is Rose Mcrae I am the Structural Protection Crew Lead/ Coordinator for the Nooaitch Band and apart of the N’laka’pamux Territory.  My key goals are to remove forest fuels to reduce the long-term risk of Wildfires and to provide critical cross training and community partnership opportunities for BC Wildfire and the Nooaitch Band.

The newly redeveloped Nooaitch Wildfire Crew is officially ready for deployment after months of intense training, dedication, and community-focused work.  Beyond readiness for deployment the crew has been actively working to protect their own community, Nooaitch is under evaluation alert.

The crew comprised of members from the Nooaitch Band and neighboring communities has undergone extensive wildfire suppression training and safety certification to meet provincial deployment standards. Their hard work has paid off—-with contracts now in place with both the BC Wildfire Service (BCWFS) and the First Nations Emergency Services Society (FNESS), the team is now positioned to respond to wildfire emergencies across the province.

Leadership from the Nooaitch Band commended the crew’s progress, noting it as a proud example of local resilience, capacity build, and proactive wildfire mitigation.

With wildfire season underway, the Nooaitch Wildfire Crew stands as a strong, skilled, and community-driven force—ready to protect both home and province.  What I would like to add is that all communities should be a part of the FireSmart program, to protecting their property’s and livelihoods.

Thank you for nominating me as the FireSmart BC Spotlight of the month.
