While it is an excellent fire-resistant plant it is not recommended to use it or any other plant material within 1.5 m of a structure (home ignition zones). As an herbaceous perennial, it dies back to the ground in the winter and all the combustible dead material should be removed to allow for the new growth to appear in the spring. Be sure to remove any debris that might accumulate in the foliage as this may affect its combustibility.
