This hardy plant is a lovely fire-resistant shrub/small tree with fern-like leaves and an interesting branching habit. Smooth sumac will form colonies and is useful for erosion control and bank stabilization. First Nations peoples have used the young sprouts in salads, berries to sweeten beverages, and have boiled the fruits for medicinal purposes.
