FireSmart for Kids
Hi there! I’m Ember, and I’m here to help you learn all about wildfires and how to keep your home safe. On this page, kids and families can learn my story, play games, explore safety tips, and discover fun ways to become FireSmart. Let’s get started!
Wildfires are big, fast-moving fires that can happen in forests, fields, or even near towns and homes. They’re powerful, but with the right steps, we can all help keep our homes safer.
That’s where I come in! My job is to teach kids (like you!) how to be FireSmart. That means knowing what to do to help prepare your home and community for wildfire. Even small actions like moving your toys off the lawn or sweeping the porch can make a big difference.

FireSmart Tipsfrom Ember
Look Up
Look at your roof and gutters for leaves, sticks, or pine needles. These things can catch fire, so it's important to keep them clean.
Sweep it up!
Use a broom or small rake to clear dry leaves and twigs from porches, stairs, and walkways.
Help tidy the yard.
Put away toys, sports gear, and outdoor cushions when you’re done playing. These can burn if embers land on them.
Water your plants.
If it’s your job to water the flowers or grass, you’re helping keep things green and less likely to catch fire!
Spot the firewood.
If you see a pile of firewood close to the house, tell an adult. It’s safer to keep it farther away.
Know your exits.
Talk with your family about how to safely leave your house in an emergency. Practice your plan!
Make a grab-and-go bag.
Think about what you’d want in your emergency kit—like a flashlight, water bottle, a favourite toy, or snacks—and help pack it!
Keep vents clear.
If you see leaves or fluff near outside vents or under the deck, let an adult know.
Be a FireSmart detective!
Try to spot things outside that don’t belong—like dry branches on the roof or toys in the yard—and help clean them up.

The Story Behind My Name
So, why am I called Ember?
Well, during a wildfire, tiny pieces of burning material—called embers—can float through the air and start new fires when they land on dry leaves or grass.
Even though I’m small, I have a big job: helping people learn how to stop those little embers from causing damage. That’s why I remind everyone that even the smallest actions can make a BIG difference when it comes to staying FireSmart.
