Amber Jubilee Ninebark

(aka Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Jefam’)

This colourful fire-resistant shrub features vibrant yellow-orange-red leaves in the spring, turning lime-green in summer and then purple by fall. The peeling tan bark reveals the inner red bark which provides visual interest once the leaves are gone. Generally, peeling bark increases fire risk and that is why this plant is more appropriate for the extended zone. Peeling bark ignites faster than smooth bark. While ninebark is considered lower risk, it shows that not all plants on the Plant Tool are equally fire-resistant. This ninebark is a nice size for a hedge and can be a great alternative to cedars and junipers for summer privacy.
